The historic waterworks

In the middle of the 19th century, when water consumption increased due to population growth and advancing industrialization, the city's water supply had to be additionally secured. In the course of this, the waterworks was built on a meadow on the banks of the Elbe. From 1859 bank-filtered Elbe water was obtained here and supplied directly to the city via a water pipe. Around 1880, the daily water output was increased to around 26,000m³ through additions. However, years of low water and high consumption caused further worry lines. In the course of this, further construction work was carried out and the water meters were also introduced. At the beginning of World War I, high-quality water resources were discovered in a heather and, from around 1930, the city was also supplied with heather water. From the 1960s onwards, the water quality of the Elbe continued to decline, and consequently the "Heide" took over supplying the city. At the same time, this meant the end of the waterworks, which was then only used to obtain industrial water and later functioned as an administration and training company. In 1990 the waterworks was completely shut down.
