VEB Heavy Machinery Combine Sket

At the beginning of 2021, we were able to inspect the last empty factory halls from the early days of the Gruson factories before they were demolished. The buildings had already been gutted and the demolition excavators were eating their way through the huge hall complex. Nevertheless, we were impressed by the historical building structure, which is now unfortunately disappearing forever. The history of the work:

Hermann Gruson founded the plant in Buckau near Magdeburg in 1855 as an iron foundry. At the end of the 19th century, Gruson was the world market leader in the construction of armored towers for fortresses. But guns and other armaments were also produced. In 1893 the plant was sold to Friedrich Krupp AG. From then on, processing and rolling mills, metallurgical plants and ore processing plants, and mixing plants for the chemical industry were also manufactured. In the 1930s, the Grusonwerk produced the first prototypes of the Panzer I, later the Panzer IV (until the end of 1941 the only manufacturer) and, based on the Panzer IV, the Sturmgeschütz IV and the gun car IV (Dicker Max self-propelled gun), as well as various special motor vehicles. Production took place in a 3-shift system. By the end of the Second World War, around 80 percent of the plant had been destroyed and the Soviet Military Administration in Germany (SMAD) took over management. Almost half of the remaining systems were dismantled. On November 1, 1946, the company was renamed Maschinenfabrik Krupp-Gruson to Sowjetischen Maschinenbau AG (SAG), and a Soviet general director was appointed. On May 1, 1951, the plant was converted into VEB Schwermaschinenbau "Ernst Thälmann" Magdeburg. The VEB Heavy Machinery Combine "Ernst Thälmann" (SKET) was founded on January 1, 1969. The focus of the product range was on equipment for the metalworking and smelting industry, such as complete rolling mills, large-scale plants, etc.

After the reunification, former combine companies were spun off as GmbHs from the beginning of 1990, and in 1993 the Treuhand privatized these companies, some of which still produce on parts of the site today.
