​ The Halle slaughterhouse can be called directly here, as it is the most famous lost place in the country. In recent years there has been a lot of fire here, so visiting the outbuildings was not possible due to the risk of collapse. Garbage and used tires are stored everywhere. I was impressed by the large hall with its beautiful structure, which despite its poor condition still exuded a bit of morbid charm.

The 1st municipal slaughterhouse and cattle yard with its imposing market and slaughterhouses was built by 1893. The reasons for the construction included the prohibition of private slaughter and the need to monitor hygiene. In addition, one wanted to curb the traffic disruptions due to the cattle drive. The area was fundamentally expanded in the years 1932-1939. During the GDR era, the operation was continued as VEB Slaughter and Processing Plant Halle (Saale) under the VEB Combine Meat Industry of the Halle District. Up to 1,000 people worked here. At peak times in the late 1970s, over 1,000 pigs, 200 and 70 small animals were slaughtered per shift every day. In 1993 the slaughterhouse finally had to cease operations.
