Former Mitropa company laundry in Hohenschönhausen

At Goeckestrasse 32-34 in Alt-Hohenschönhausen, in the middle of a residential area, there were factory buildings that were demolished in 2016. Until 1937 there was an undeveloped factory site of the Kilian machine works, whose factory building was in the neighboring Werneuchener Straße at the current location of the Philipp-Reiss School from 1977. In 1937 the Mitropa AG laundry was built on the site. It was located on an industrial siding on the Tegel-Friedrichsfelde industrial railway. The factory buildings of Kilian and Mitropa were largely destroyed in World War II. The industrial siding was shut down after 1945 because it ran through the neighboring Stasi restricted area of Hohenschönhausen.

A storage area and wood office were set up on the cleared site. Plant III of the VEB plant for signaling and security technology in Berlin was built on the property around 1960. This was where the prefabrication, electroplating and paint shop of the main factory in Elsenstrasse was. 1991 WSSB Berlin was sold to Siemens AG. In addition to modernizing Elsenstrasse, Siemens also invested several million DM in modernizing the location in Goeckestrasse. Investments were made in a new hall, modern machine tools and a paint shop. But after a corporate strategy change to “focus on the core business”, the location was sold in 1994 to a medium-sized entrepreneur from Cologne, who had to close the plant in 2001 due to declining orders. A commercial yard was then established on the site. The most important employer was the Pro-Blech company, founded by former Siemens employees. In 2016 the property was sold, the halls demolished and apartments built on.
