Railway depot Berlin Pankow

The Pankow-Heinersdorf depot was built in 1904. At that time, Heinersdorf was still an independent rural community in the north of Berlin. There are two engine sheds on the site, each connected to a large turntable. In contrast to the circular shed, the Lokrundschuppen could not be enlarged. As the locomotives got longer and longer, the end of the round houses was sealed. The locomotive shed in Pankow-Heinersdorf is therefore the last of its kind. With the installed turntable, it could serve up to 24 different tracks.

The depot with water tower and roundhouse was not shut down until the end of the 1990s.

When I visited the site a few years ago, it was still open to the public. The large roundhouse is imposing. But the roof was already badly damaged at that time. The former vocational school on the site is also architecturally interesting. It is a building from the 60s and the construction is similar to the Bauhaus architecture of the 20s.

Today the area is said to be fenced in and populated by shady characters. An investor and the district have been arguing about future use for years.
